From the organizers: Symposium “La fabrique du vivant” will be held on March 30th 2019 at the Centre Pompidou, on the issues of digital technologies and the living. It will gather internationally renowned artists, designers, architects, philosophers and scientists who are working on new approaches towards biology and synthetic life. It will take place within the international forum Vertigo coordinated by IRCAM – The Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music – as part of the third edition of “Mutations/Creations”, a platform for art, science and innovation at the Centre Pompidou.

The exposition “La Fabrique du vivant” looks back at the archeology of the living and artificial life and presents the most important creations and innovations in the domains of art, design, architecture, and music. This day features a dialogue between the exhibition’s curators and artists in the fields of biotechnologies, human and social sciences on the major themes addressed: engineering nature and bio-materials, programming the living and modelling the living, evolving systems and bio-computational architecture.

2:30-4PM | ENGINEERING NATURE

Between nature and technology, design calls upon “bio-fabrication”, on new “disruptive technologies” of the living that do not lead to a form, but to a process.  Bio materials, made with biological organisms (mushroom mycelium, Laminar seaweed, bacteria, yeasts, etc.) lead to new, sustainable, and biodegradable objects. Design provides research with new morphologies inspired by life.

4:30-6PM | PROGRAM THE LIVING

Today, artists explore the “living” in laboratories by diving into the heart of material and the invisible, questioning boundaries between the living and the non-living. Here, life sciences, genetic engineering, molecular biology, tissue cultures are used as an artistic medium. A new, living materiality is explored, raising the question of the role of humans in their environment.

6-7:30PM | MODELLING THE LIVING: SCALABLE SYSTEMS AND BIO-COMPUTATIONAL ARCHITECTURE

The architects simulate scalable systems of living growth to develop a bio-computational architecture. The manipulation of natural phenomena is coupled with digital fabrication techniques to inaugurate a true meta-ecology. Micro-organisms transform into an architectural medium and construction material.

La Fabrique du Vivant [The Fabric of the Living] retraces an archaeology of the living and of artificial life. This group exhibition offers a prospective presentation of the recent work of some fifty designers, in addition to research from scientific laboratories.

In the digital era, a new interaction is emerging between creation and the fields of life science, neuroscience and synthetic biology. The focus now lies on matter itself. The notion of ‘living’ takes on a new form of artificiality, somewhere between inertia and momentum. The ‘living’ spans the physical field of matter and the immateriality of the digital world. Biotechnologies are now a medium used by artists, designers or architects. Digital simulation tools now allow us to recreate the living. Between biology and genetics, design takes a cross-disciplinary approach, like a biotechnological artefact where living matter dictates the form. Design now turns to ‘bio-manufacturing’ and new ‘disruptive technologies’ around living matter. Bio-materials, made from organic life (fungus mycelium, laminar algae, bacteria and yeasts, etc.) have led to new sustainable, biodegradable objects. Studying the behaviour of life (animals or plants) leads to innovative architectural design producing new forms of nature, between the digital ecosystem and living systems. Artists question the links between the living and the artificial, as well as the processes of artificial recreation of life; the manipulation of chemical procedures on living matter; selfgenerating works with ever-changing forms; hybrid works of organic matter and industrial material, or the hybridisation of human and plant cells. In this era of digital technologies, artists draw on the world of biology, developing new social and political environments based on the issue of the living.
